Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has pledged decisive action against those who siphoned off wealth from Bangladesh, describing the plunder of the economy as an act of “grave treason.”

“The looters must face justice if we are to build a better future for the next generations,” Yunus said on Saturday after receiving a report from the National Board of Revenue’s (NBR) Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) and NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan at the State Guest House Jamuna. He affirmed that the government would fully support efforts to recover laundered assets abroad and hold accountable those who acquired overseas properties with illicit funds.

“We must set a precedent so that no one dares to loot the nation’s wealth and transfer it abroad again,” the chief adviser emphasized.

He directed the CIC to step up its money laundering investigations, expand probes into additional destinations, and coordinate closely with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and other concerned agencies.

“The people must see how their wealth was plundered. For that, every agency has to work in unison,” Yunus added.

His remarks came shortly after the CIC disclosed that it had tracked nearly Tk40,000 crore worth of assets built abroad through laundered money, along with hundreds of foreign passports obtained by Bangladeshis in exchange for cash.
