Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus spoke with former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown in a phone call on Friday, focusing on Bangladesh’s economic recovery and the urgent need to improve education for Rohingya refugee children.

Gordon Brown—currently serving as the UN Special Envoy for Global Education—commended Prof Yunus for his leadership in navigating Bangladesh through economic difficulties. He also lauded Yunus's efforts to stabilise the economy and foster inclusive growth.

Both leaders voiced serious concern over the lack of formal education for Rohingya children in refugee camps, where more than half a million remain without access to proper schooling. They stressed the vital importance of ensuring educational opportunities to prevent the emergence of a “lost generation.”

“We must ensure Rohingya children grow up with hope and the tools to build a better future,” said Prof Yunus, reaffirming his government’s commitment to mobilising international and domestic support for the refugee community.

Gordon Brown expressed a desire to work closely with Bangladesh in expanding educational initiatives in the camps, leveraging his global role in advocating for education. He also signaled interest in visiting Bangladesh in the near future to assess the situation on the ground and explore potential avenues for assistance.

Their conversation also included broader discussions on the interim government's reform agenda and its efforts to ensure a peaceful democratic transition.
