Germany has expressed its desire to see a participatory election take place in Bangladesh.

Germany expects Bangladesh’s upcoming national election to be free, fair, credible, and genuinely participatory, its ambassador said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a DCAB Talk organised by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh at the Jatiya Press Club, German Ambassador Dr Rüdiger Lotz said Berlin wants an election that upholds democratic standards and sees strong voter engagement.

“We expect the election to be free, fair, credible, and participatory. We also hope for a high voter turnout,” he said. “The chief adviser has indicated turnout could reach 60 percent — we share that expectation. We also hope political violence remains low throughout the campaign.”

DCAB President AKM Moinuddin chaired the discussion, with General Secretary Arifuzzaman Mamun also speaking.
