Defaulted loans in banks have surged to Tk 6.44 lakh crore—more than twice the previous figure.
Default loans in the banking sector exceeded Tk 6.44 lakh crore at the end of September, making up nearly 36% of all outstanding loans — the highest proportion of bad debt recorded since 2000.
According to Bangladesh Bank data released on Wednesday, non-performing loans more than doubled over the past year, rising by Tk 3,59,718 crore from Tk 2,84,977 crore.
