Garment Workers' Protests Prompt Closure of Mirpur-11 Metro Station
Metro train services have been bypassing Mirpur-11 station since 10:22am on Tuesday after authorities temporarily suspended operations there amid protests by garment workers demanding higher wages and benefits.
All entrances to the station have also been closed, according to an incident report by MRT Police Inspector (Operations) Md Mohsin Sheikh. He confirmed that protests had erupted in the Mirpur-11 area, prompting authorities to suspend services at the station as a precautionary measure.
The station remained closed, with metro trains continuing to bypass it until 11:20am, when the report was filed.
Witnesses said garment workers took to the streets in the Mirpur-11 area in the morning. Tensions escalated at one point as protesters and police became involved in clashes, including incidents of chasing and counter-chasing.
The workers' demonstrations, demanding an increase in the minimum wage, entered their third consecutive day on Tuesday.
