Clashes Erupt Between RMG Workers and Police in Ashulia as Sound Grenades Fired
Police Fire Tear Gas, Sound Grenades to Disperse Protesting Garment Workers; Traffic Disrupted on Abdullahpur-Baipail Road
Separate clashes broke out between garment workers and police in Ashulia on Tuesday morning as workers staged protests in the Narsinghpur area over their demands.
The clashes erupted around 8:00am on 3 November along the Abdullahpur-Baipail road in Narsinghpur. Police fired tear gas shells and sound grenades to disperse the protesters, while workers retaliated by throwing bricks and stones at law enforcers. Water cannons were kept on standby at key locations to tackle the situation.
According to police and local sources, workers from several garment factories in Jamgora, Narsinghpur and Nishchintapur began gathering in front of the main gate of Sharmin Group after 8:00am. Employees from several nearby factories also joined the demonstration.
At one point, the protesters blocked the road and set fire to plastic materials at the site of an elevated expressway project. When police attempted to disperse the demonstrators, a chase and counter-chase broke out, further escalating tensions in the area.
Abu Taleb, a sub-inspector of Ashulia Police Station, said workers had been throwing bricks and stones since the morning. Police later moved to disperse the protesters.
The clashes temporarily disrupted traffic on the Abdullahpur-Baipail road, triggering panic among local residents and pedestrians.
Additional police, industrial police and joint forces personnel were deployed at several key intersections across the industrial zone to bring the situation under control.
