The Central Shaheed Minar is receiving its final preparations as the nation readies to observe International Mother Language Day with solemn respect, honoring the sacrifices of the language martyrs.

Located near the University of Dhaka, the historic monument has turned into a center of vibrant activity. Students and workers are busy cleaning the premises, repainting the structure, and completing traditional alpana motifs that reflect cultural pride and remembrance. A fresh coat of white paint has been applied to the monument and its altar to restore its dignified look.

Students from the Faculty of Fine Arts are spearheading the artistic work, creating intricate alpana designs across the monument grounds and nearby roads. More than 500 students have taken part in the preparations, demonstrating strong dedication to commemorating the occasion.

“We have finished the initial outlines and are now adding colors. Everyone is working together to ensure everything is ready on time,” said Meherrunnesa Iti, one of the participating students.

Officials said symbolic features, including the iconic red sun backdrop, will be installed once the painting is complete. The surrounding walls are also being decorated with Bengali alphabets and graffiti illustrating the history and significance of the Language Movement.

From late tonight, people from all walks of life are expected to gather at the monument with ফুল to pay tribute to those who laid down their lives to defend the Bangla language. Observed each year on 21 February, the day carries deep national importance and has been recognized globally by UNESCO as International Mother Language Day.

Security has been reinforced in and around the monument, with CCTV cameras installed and temporary control rooms set up by law enforcement agencies to ensure a peaceful and orderly observance.

The Central Shaheed Minar stands as a lasting symbol of sacrifice, linguistic identity, and the enduring commitment to protecting cultural heritage and language rights.
