European Union (EU) Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller has hailed the signing of the “July Charter” as a major stride toward political consensus and reform, as Bangladesh moves closer to its national elections scheduled for early 2026.

“I was delighted to join the signing ceremony of the July Charter, a document that lays out a broad political consensus on fundamental reforms,” Ambassador Miller said in a Facebook post following the event on Friday.

He noted that the signing marked “an important moment in the country’s political transition, demonstrating unity of purpose as Bangladesh advances toward elections in early 2026.”

The July National Charter 2025, signed on Friday, brought together 25 political parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.

The envoy’s participation in the ceremony underscored the EU’s continued commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s democratic journey and governance reforms.

The European Union has long partnered with Bangladesh to promote good governance and institutional accountability. In recent months, it has reaffirmed its support for free, fair, and participatory elections — including technical cooperation and the potential deployment of election observation missions — consistent with the EU’s broader commitment to democracy and sustainable development.
