The Editors’ Council has urged the authorities and political parties to ensure the safety of journalists covering the upcoming elections.

In a statement issued today, the council said journalists face multiple risks while gathering and reporting news during election periods, making their safety and security in the field a critical concern at this time.

The council called on the state, the interim government, the Election Commission and relevant law enforcement agencies to provide adequate protection for journalists during election coverage. It also appealed to political parties to play an active role in safeguarding reporters.

Expressing hope that all stakeholders would recognise the importance of the issue, the Editors’ Council urged them to take effective steps to ensure journalists’ safety throughout the election period. The statement was signed by Editors’ Council President Nurul Kabir, editor of New Age, and General Secretary Dewan Hanif Mahmud, editor and publisher of Bonik Barta.
