Bangladesh Signs OIC Labour Centre Statute to Boost Workers’ Rights

Bangladesh has formally signed the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Labour Centre Statute at the OIC headquarters in Jeddah, marking a step forward in promoting labour rights and welfare in the country.

Brigadier General (retd) M Sakhawat Hussain, Adviser to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, signed the statute on behalf of the Bangladesh government during a ceremony held on April 13. He was warmly received by OIC Assistant Secretary General for Economic Affairs, Ahmad Kawesa Sengendo.

In a discussion following the signing, both parties highlighted the significance of the statute in advancing workers' rights and reaffirmed their commitment to closer cooperation on trade, investment, and labour-related issues.

The adviser noted that Bangladesh is a signatory to all core conventions and protocols of the International Labour Organization (ILO), and has taken significant steps to improve factory safety, raise the minimum wage, and ensure workers’ welfare.

He also briefed OIC officials on the rapid growth of Bangladesh’s shipbuilding industry, which is creating increasing employment opportunities for skilled and semi-skilled workers.

Bangladesh's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the OIC, M JH Jabed, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Labour and Employment, were also present at the ceremony.
