Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman has stated that Bangladesh has upheld multilateralism as a key pillar of its foreign policy since joining the United Nations, reaffirming its dedication to global peace, security, and cooperation.

He made the remarks at a reception hosted by the Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York on Thursday, marking the country’s 56th Independence and National Day. The event was attended by around 150 permanent representatives, senior UN officials, and members of the diplomatic community, according to a message received on Friday.

As the chief guest, the Foreign Minister highlighted Bangladesh’s active engagement with the UN since 1974, including its contributions to international peacekeeping efforts and its ongoing humanitarian assistance for the Rohingya population.

He noted that through constructive engagement aligned with the UN Charter, Bangladesh has achieved significant socio-economic progress over the past five decades despite facing multiple challenges.

In his welcome remarks, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, said March 26 represents not only the nation’s birth but also the enduring victory of the people’s will, dignity, and freedom.

Earlier, the Mission held a discussion session at its auditorium, where messages from national leaders were presented and a special documentary on the significance of Independence Day was screened.
