Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has directed the authorities concerned to launch an investigation into the devastating fire at a garment factory and chemical warehouse in Shialbari, Mirpur, which has so far claimed 16 lives and injured several others.

“Chief Adviser, who is currently in Rome, has been informed about the tragic fire in Mirpur. He immediately instructed the authorities concerned to investigate the incident and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives,” Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam told the media in a briefing in Rome today. “We stand beside the affected families,” he quoted Professor Yunus as saying.

Referring to previous incidents of fires in chemical factories in Bangladesh, Shafiqul said, “Despite our best efforts, it has been observed that some people continue to establish such factories illegally.”

He added that an investigation is underway to determine whether the establishments possessed valid licenses and fire safety clearances from the Fire Service and Civil Defence Department. Appropriate action will be taken against those found responsible once the probe is completed, he said.
