Bangladesh has initiated steps to gradually reduce import duties as part of preparations for trade dialogue with the United States. In this context, Economic Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed has announced the full withdrawal of import duties on 110 products.

The announcement was made on Monday (June 2) at 3:00 PM during Dr. Ahmed’s presentation of the national budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year. With no elected government currently in place and Parliament non-functional, the budget is not being presented in the House and is instead being broadcast on Bangladesh Television.

Outlining the budget proposals, Dr. Ahmed stated: “To support trade discussions with the United States and streamline our tariff structure, I propose the complete withdrawal of import duties on 110 products, reduction of duties on 65 products, removal of supplementary duty on 9 items, and reduction of supplementary duty on 442 items.”

He also proposed the full elimination of existing tariff values as part of a gradual phasing out of minimum and tariff-based valuation systems. Additionally, he suggested removing the minimum customs value on 84 products and increasing it for 23 others to ensure more rational customs assessments.
