A Dhaka court has sentenced three individuals to death for the murder of Ismail Hossain Jisan, a student at the European University of Bangladesh, which occurred over five years ago. The verdict was delivered on Sunday by Farzana Yasmin, the Fifth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge of Dhaka.

The convicted individuals are Hasibul Hossain (alias Hasib), Srabon (alias Shaon), and Abdullah Al Noman. Another accused, Sazani Akter, was acquitted due to insufficient evidence. Hasib, hailing from Rajpat in Gopalganj’s Kashiani, is the son of the late Rafiqul Islam. Shaon, from Char Gobra in Gopalganj Sadar, is the son of Obaidullah Molla, while Noman, from Panchkaran in Bagerhat’s Morrelganj, is the son of Zakir Hossain (alias Khokon).

Additional Public Prosecutor Shariful Islam Liton confirmed that Shaon remains at large, with the court issuing both an arrest warrant and a warrant of execution against him. The other two convicts, who were present during the trial, were sent back to prison following the verdict.

According to the case details, Jisan, who supported his studies by working as a ride-share bike driver, disappeared on May 12, 2019, at approximately 4:30 PM from Shyamoli. His father, Sabbir Hossain Sahid, initially filed a general diary (GD) at Gacha Police Station in Gazipur and later another at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

Jisan's body was discovered on May 23, 2019, inside the safety tank of Hasibul’s house in the Madhya Kamar Juri area of Gacha. His hands and feet were tied. Subsequently, Sabbir filed a murder case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on the same day.

Sub-inspector Suzanur Islam of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police filed a charge sheet against four suspects on January 12, 2020. The court framed charges against them on March 30, 2022, and after examining 18 out of 25 witnesses, delivered the verdict.
