Shashi Tharoor: It wouldn't be appropriate to say too much about Bangladesh

Amid rising tensions between India and Bangladesh, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor voiced concerns over the situation in Bangladesh following the arrest of spiritual leader Chinmoy Krishna Das.

Tharoor noted that the Committee on External Affairs, which he currently chairs, has scheduled a meeting for December 11 to discuss the developments in Bangladesh. He stated, "If the government has any statements to make on behalf of the Foreign Ministry, it would be helpful for External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to address Parliament. We have called a meeting of the External Affairs Committee on December 11 to understand the situation in Bangladesh. We are concerned about the ongoing events there. All minorities should enjoy their democratic rights in their country."

However, Tharoor added, "It wouldn’t be appropriate to comment too much, as this is a matter that doesn’t directly concern our country."

The arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das has ignited widespread protests, with calls for his immediate release. Uddhanand Das, an ISKCON pracharak from Kalaburagi, Karnataka, referred to the interim government in Bangladesh as "anti-Hindu."

"Our goal is to condemn the anti-Hindu government in Bangladesh... We must unite and support Hindus," Das told ANI.

On Thursday, ISKCON expressed solidarity with Chinmoy Krishna Das, posting on X, "ISKCON Inc. stands with Chinmoy Krishna Das. Our prayers to Lord Krishna for the protection of all these devotees."

Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested on charges of sedition after allegedly raising a flag on a stand displaying Bangladesh's national flag. He was presented in a Chittagong court on November 25, which denied his bail plea and remanded him to custody.
