Japan Reaffirms Support for Bangladesh’s Interim Government, Strengthens Bilateral Ties

On Sunday, Japan reiterated its support for Bangladesh’s interim government and expressed interest in expanding bilateral cooperation to enhance trade and development collaboration.

Ikuina Akiko, Japan’s Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, conveyed this message during her meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna.

“Japan values its relationship with Bangladesh and has consistently extended its support. My visit reaffirms our commitment to strengthening this partnership,” Akiko stated.

Chief Adviser Yunus described Japan as a close ally and supportive friend, emphasizing the importance of strong collaboration at this pivotal time.

“This is a new Bangladesh, and it presents an opportune moment to deepen our relationship,” he remarked.

As Bangladesh’s largest bilateral development partner, Japan has played a crucial role in its socio-economic progress through sustained and generous support. Currently, bilateral trade stands at approximately $4 billion, with Japan ranking among Bangladesh’s top five export destinations. Over 350 Japanese companies operate in the country.

During the discussion, the Japanese vice-minister inquired about the interim government’s reform initiatives and plans for the upcoming general elections.

Akiko extended an invitation to the Chief Adviser to visit Japan for the Nikkei 30th Future of Asia conference in Tokyo on May 29-30, 2025. She also invited Professor Yunus, a recipient of the 2004 Nikkei Asia Prize, to attend the Osaka Expo 2025 in May, where May 11 will be observed as Bangladesh Day. She noted that the Chief Adviser’s presence at the event would be a significant encouragement for all.
