High Court retracts verdict on reassessment of Tk 600 crore income tax from Grameen Kalyan.
A High Court bench has withdrawn its verdict rejecting two writ petitions that challenged the National Board of Revenue's (NBR) order, which reassessed Grameen Kalyan's income tax for various years at Tk 600 crore. Grameen Kalyan, a charitable organization founded by Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, faced reassessment orders that it contested. The bench of Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar and Justice SM Maniruzzaman, which originally delivered the judgement on August 4, forwarded the case documents to Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed on September 8. According to Grameen Kalyan's lawyer, Sarder Jinnat Ali, the verdict was recalled as junior judge Justice SM Maniruzzaman felt unable to write the judgement.
