BNP senior leader Major (retired) Hafizuddin Ahmed today expressed concerns that the interim government may aim to prolong its stay in power, given the lack of substantial progress on reforms. Speaking at an event at Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU), Hafizuddin alleged that the advisory council of the interim government includes several individuals with affiliations to the Awami League.

"The interim government, under the leadership of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, is primarily responsible for facilitating a transfer of power to elected representatives through a fair election. However, they seem intent on holding power for up to 20 years," he claimed.

Hafiz urged the government to expedite electoral reforms to enable national elections as soon as possible, noting that remaining reforms could be addressed by the elected government. "I see no signs of reform. Many pro-Awami League figures have already been appointed to the advisory council," he said.

The event, organized by Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal, was held to commemorate National Revolution and Solidarity Day, marking the civil-military uprising of November 7, 1975.

Hafiz, a member of the BNP standing committee, accused the Awami League-led government under Sheikh Hasina of dismantling key institutions, including turning the police force into an oppressive tool. He criticized the enactment of the Digital Security Act, describing it as a "dangerous law" aimed at silencing dissent.

The BNP leader further claimed that a strong movement by BNP and allied parties had destabilized the government. "Towards the end, even students and their parents joined the protests, forcing Sheikh Hasina to flee the country hastily. She left with only a single outfit, showing no remorse," he remarked.
