Dhaka has expressed deep concern over the recent influx of forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals, primarily due to ongoing armed conflicts in Myanmar, particularly in Rakhine state. This concern was raised during a courtesy visit by Myanmar’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, U Kyaw Soe Moe, to Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, according to a press release.

During the meeting, the foreign secretary urged Myanmar to take necessary steps to curb armed conflicts near the Bangladesh-Myanmar border and prevent the infiltration of both civilians and armed personnel from Rakhine into Bangladesh. He emphasized the importance of an early, voluntary, and sustainable repatriation process for the displaced Myanmar nationals.

In response, the Myanmar ambassador assured that the repatriation process would begin once peace and stability are restored in Rakhine state.

Both sides also recognized the significant potential for cooperation in areas such as trade, shipping connectivity, energy, and agriculture. Other bilateral issues were discussed during the meeting as well.

Ambassador Moe congratulated the foreign secretary on his new role and expressed hope that bilateral relations between the two countries would strengthen further during his tenure. The foreign secretary also extended his congratulations to the ambassador on his appointment.
