A Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat, the former chairman of Padma Bank, in connection with corruption allegations. The order was issued by Judge Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court following an application submitted by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Director Md Masudur Rahman, head of the inquiry team. ACC Public Prosecutor Mahmud Hossain Jahangir presented the application on behalf of the ACC.

In the application, it was stated that Sarafat is accused of illegally amassing large sums of money through various irregularities, including abuse of power, bribery, and money laundering to Canada. It was also noted that Sarafat had placed advertisements in national newspapers from an unknown location to defend himself.

The ACC expressed concern that Sarafat might attempt to flee the country, potentially disrupting the investigation, and requested the travel ban to prevent his departure.

The judge further directed the ACC to send the order to the Special Branch's immigration division for enforcement. Meanwhile, the ACC has launched an investigation into allegations that Sarafat took over Padma Bank and embezzled Tk 800 crore from the stock market.

Sarafat, with assistance from senior police officials and an intelligence agency, had taken control of Padma Bank. He resigned as chairman in January this year, citing health reasons.
