Dhaka College Principal: The new framework for seven colleges is yet to be finalized

Dhaka College Principal Prof AKM Elias has confirmed that the affiliation of seven colleges with Dhaka University (DU) has been officially cancelled. This decision was made following a meeting between the principals of the colleges and the DU administration. However, the future academic framework for these colleges has yet to be finalized.

Speaking to reporters at Dhaka College on Monday, Prof Elias stated that the government has formed a committee to address the situation. The committee will engage with college principals, department heads, and education experts to determine a comprehensive and effective structure for the colleges.

Prof Elias also announced that starting from the 2024-2025 academic year, new admissions for the seven colleges will no longer fall under DU’s jurisdiction. However, DU will continue to oversee the ongoing examinations and academic responsibilities for currently enrolled students. While the principals discussed students' six-point demands during the meeting, not all issues were resolved, as certain decisions fall under the purview of the DU administration.

The newly formed committee will focus on identifying challenges, consulting with stakeholders, and crafting solutions. Prof Elias expressed optimism for a balanced and pragmatic outcome that aligns with the interests of students. He further emphasized that future decisions will involve discussions with students and that no final decision will be made without their input.

When asked about the prior controversy involving the DU pro-vice-chancellor (academic) and his alleged behavior during a clash with students, Prof Elias described the incident as "undesirable." While it was part of the discussions, the matter remains unresolved.

Earlier on Monday, the DU administration held an emergency meeting with the principals of the affiliated colleges, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan. Several key decisions regarding the colleges' separation from DU were made during the meeting, and further updates are expected following consultations with the government-formed committee and other stakeholders.
