Approximately 85 people have been confirmed dead after a Jeju Air plane crashed during landing in South Korea, the national fire agency reported on Sunday. Dramatic footage captured the moment the aircraft burst into flames.

"Two people have been rescued so far, while 85 have died," the agency stated, noting that 25 of the victims were male and 37 female.

The aircraft, carrying 181 people, crashed at Muan International Airport in the country's southwest on Sunday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the crash was likely caused by "contact with birds, resulting in malfunctioning landing gear" as the plane attempted to land. The passengers included 175 travelers and six crew members.

A photograph from the scene showed the tail section of the jet engulfed in flames near the runway, with firefighters and emergency vehicles responding.

Acting President Choi Sang-mok called for all resources to be mobilized to assist with the rescue.

"All related agencies must deploy every available resource to save the personnel," he urged in a statement.
