Key Highlights from the Interview

Ensuring a Free and Fair Election

Maintaining law and order on election day and encouraging youth participation are top priorities.

Future of the Awami League
Addressing the party’s prospects, Alam clarified that the Awami League’s participation would be determined by its leadership. He stressed accountability for past crimes, including enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings, but denied plans to ban any political parties.

Media Freedom and Reform

The government is focused on labor reforms, attracting foreign investment, and diversifying exports while setting a foundation for long-term economic resilience.

International Relations and Regional Cooperation
Under Professor Yunus’s leadership, the government aims to revive SAARC and strengthen ties with neighboring countries like India, prioritizing equity and mutual respect in bilateral relations.

Future of English Media
Alam discussed the importance of a private-sector-led English news channel to combat misinformation and improve Bangladesh’s global narrative, stressing the need for quality journalism over government-led initiatives.

Journalist Welfare
He advocated for better salaries and protections for journalists, calling for stronger unions and copyright enforcement to uphold quality journalism.

Reflection on His Role
Comparing his current position with his time as AFP bureau chief, Alam highlighted the intensity of managing government narratives and tackling misinformation. He expressed a desire to eventually return to journalism, focusing on long-form writing and books.
