1994 Assassination Attempt on Hasina: All defendants, including 9 sentenced to death, cleared of charges

The High Court has acquitted all 47 defendants in the case concerning the 1994 assassination attempt on former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ishwardi Railway Station in Pabna. This includes the nine individuals who had previously been sentenced to death.

The ruling was delivered on Wednesday, February 5, by a bench led by Justice Muhammad Mahbub us Islam and Justice Hamidur Rahman.

Defence counsel, including Advocate Kayser Kamal, Advocate Maksud Ullah, Jamil Akhter Elahi, and AHM Kamruzzaman Mamun, represented the accused, while Deputy Attorney General Mohammad Mujibur Rahman represented the state during the hearing.

The verdict follows hearings on death references, appeals, and jail appeals, with the High Court scheduling the decision for February 5 after completing proceedings on January 30.

In the original ruling on July 3, 2019, the acting judge of Special Tribunal-3, Pabna Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Rustam Ali, sentenced nine individuals to death, 25 to life imprisonment, and 13 to 10 years in prison. The convicted individuals were identified as former and current leaders and activists of BNP, Chhatra Dal, and Jubo Dal.
