Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has reaffirmed that the interim government is dedicated to strengthening democracy and returning power to the people of Bangladesh.

“We are committed to strengthening democracy and returning power to its rightful owner — the people,” he said while addressing a special convocation ceremony at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), where he was awarded an honorary doctorate for his contributions to promoting social business.

Highlighting the significance of the youth-led uprising of July–August 2024, Prof Yunus said it had reshaped the nation’s identity and renewed hopes for the future.

“Today, we are working to build a new Bangladesh — one with just governance, an inclusive economy, and opportunities for every citizen to succeed. Our government’s focus is on ensuring peace and stability,” he said.

He stressed that reforms remain the government’s highest priority, with a clear vision, detailed plans, and strong determination to move forward. “Building a stronger, more resilient Bangladesh requires major economic changes — from empowering entrepreneurs and expanding investment in education and technology to forging stronger ties with international and regional partners,” he added.

Prof Yunus reiterated the government’s pledge to hold a free, fair, and transparent election in February 2026, ensuring that power passes to the true representatives of the people.

The ceremony was attended by Tuanku Muhriz Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir, Chancellor of UKM; Tunku Ampuan Besar Negeri Sembilan Darul Khusus, Tuanku Aishah Rohani Binti Almarhum Tengku Besar Mahmud; Tunku Ali Redhauddin Ibni Tuanku Muhriz, Pro-Chancellor of UKM; Tan Sri Datuk Rafiah Salim, Pro-Chancellor of UKM; and Dato' Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abd Kadir, Malaysia’s Minister of Higher Education, among others.
