Tarique Rahman to Highlight Bangladesh’s Changing Story at UN

Bangladesh’s participation in the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is set to take a more streamlined approach, with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman travelling to New York with a smaller delegation and a tightly focused schedule.

Unlike previous years, when large delegations often accompanied the head of government, the current visit has been shortened and the number of accompanying officials reduced, reflecting the government’s stated emphasis on austerity and efficiency. According to Foreign Ministry sources, Tarique Rahman will leave Dhaka for New York on September 21, address the UNGA on September 24 and return to Dhaka on the night of September 25. The original plan had reportedly included a longer US visit through September 29 and a trip to San Francisco.

The prime minister’s first UNGA address is expected to highlight Bangladesh’s economic recovery, development priorities and efforts to address challenges facing the country. The visit will also provide an opportunity to present the government’s policy priorities to the international community.

The streamlined schedule is being presented by government officials as part of a broader emphasis on reducing unnecessary expenditure and improving administrative efficiency. Since taking office, the government has repeatedly stressed fiscal discipline, tighter spending controls and efforts to curb waste.

On the economic front, the administration has faced a difficult environment marked by elevated inflation, pressure on foreign exchange and energy-supply challenges. Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics data show that headline inflation eased to 8.26 percent in August, down from 8.32 percent in July and marking the lowest level in 10 months. Food inflation also declined to 7.02 percent from 7.16 percent in July, although non-food inflation increased to 9.32 percent.

The government has also placed energy security among its major priorities. Its medium-term plans include drilling new gas wells, expanding LNG-import capacity and increasing renewable-energy generation. Plans are also being pursued to expand solar power, promote rooftop solar and explore waste-to-energy projects.

The administration has sought to revive private-sector activity as well, with efforts focused on reopening closed factories, improving the investment climate and restoring business confidence. The government has also introduced social-protection initiatives such as the Family Card and Farmer Card, aimed at providing targeted support to lower-income households and farmers.

Tarique Rahman’s UNGA visit will extend beyond his main speech. According to Foreign Ministry sources, his programme includes high-level UN meetings covering development, pandemic preparedness, sea-level rise and nuclear disarmament. Bangladesh will also host side events focused on issues including the Rohingya crisis.

Diplomatic sources say the prime minister is expected to hold bilateral meetings with several foreign leaders on the sidelines of the General Assembly. These include Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.

He is also scheduled to meet UN Secretary-General António Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih, European Council President António Costa, World Bank President Ajay Banga and Boeing Global President Brendan Nelson. The programme also includes a dinner hosted by US President Donald Trump.

The September visit will mark Tarique Rahman’s first address to the UN General Assembly as Bangladesh’s prime minister. He is expected to use the platform to outline his government’s vision for the country and highlight its efforts to navigate economic, energy and social challenges.

Against this backdrop, Bangladesh’s participation in the 81st UNGA is likely to centre on a message of economic recovery, development and renewed international engagement. For the government, the visit is an opportunity to present its account of a changing Bangladesh while pursuing concrete diplomatic and development priorities on the global stage.
