Over 50 Injured as Private University Students Clash in Savar
The clashes broke out after a City University student allegedly spat from a motorbike, with the spit landing on a Daffodil University student.
At least 50 people were injured in overnight clashes between students of City University and Daffodil International University in Savar’s Birulia union on Monday.
Abdul Ohab, in-charge of the Birulia police outpost, said tensions flared in the evening after a City University student riding a motorbike accidentally splashed or spat on a Daffodil University student.
Eyewitnesses said the dispute over the “spitting incident” quickly escalated into scuffles and fistfights. Police intervened and initially managed to calm the situation.
However, the conflict reignited when a group of City University students allegedly assaulted a Daffodil University student, Ohab added.
Around 9pm, some 40–50 City University students reportedly attacked a residential building housing Daffodil University students, hurling brickbats and using local weapons to vandalise the property.
In retaliation, shortly after midnight, nearly a thousand Daffodil University students marched toward the City University campus, breaking in and vandalising the administrative building. They also looted computer equipment and other items, and set fire to or damaged at least eight vehicles on the premises.
By morning, the situation was brought under control, said Sub-Inspector Habibur Rahman, duty officer at Savar Model Police Station.
