Bangladesh has sought stronger collaboration with UN Women to promote women’s economic empowerment, enhance climate resilience, and advance the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda.

The issue was discussed during a meeting between State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam and UN Women Executive Director and Under-Secretary-General Sima Bahous in New York, according to a press release.

During the meeting, the state minister highlighted former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia’s landmark initiative of introducing free education for girls and underscored the government’s ongoing efforts to empower women through free education up to the postgraduate level, as well as improved reproductive and mental health services.

Bahous commended Bangladesh’s achievements in promoting women’s empowerment and gender equality. She also congratulated the country on its election as President of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly and reaffirmed UN Women’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Bangladesh on women’s empowerment and the WPS agenda.

She further lauded the contributions of Bangladeshi women to peacebuilding efforts and United Nations peacekeeping missions.

Addressing the Rohingya crisis, the state minister expressed concern over funding shortages affecting Rohingya women and girls and reiterated that the safe and sustainable repatriation of the displaced population to Myanmar remains the only lasting solution to the crisis.
