With gold setting a new record in the local market, the price of the precious metal has climbed to an unprecedented Tk269,788 per bhori, surpassing all previous highs.

Jewellers raised the price of gold by Tk7,348 per bhori following an increase in pure gold prices on the international market. The decision was made at a meeting of the Standing Committee on Pricing and Price Monitoring of the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) on Wednesday (28 January).

The revised rates took effect across the country from 10:15am on the same day.

Under the new pricing structure, 22-carat gold is now priced at Tk269,788 per bhori, 21-carat gold at Tk259,815, 18-carat gold at Tk220,741, and traditional gold at Tk181,725 per bhori.

Silver prices have also hit record levels. BAJUS has set the price of 22-carat silver at Tk7,756 per bhori, while 21-carat silver will sell at Tk7,406 and 18-carat silver at Tk6,356 per bhori. Traditional silver has been priced at Tk5,143 per bhori.

In addition to the listed prices, buyers will have to pay a 5% value-added tax (VAT) imposed by the government, along with a minimum making charge of 6% fixed by BAJUS. Making charges may vary depending on the design and quality of the jewellery.

Previously, on 26 January, gold prices in the country reached a then-record high of Tk262,440 per bhori.
