Newlywed Couple Detained After Former Vice Principal's Murder in Dhaka
Police have detained a newlywed couple who fled the residence of Mohammad Saifur Rahman Bhuiyan, former vice principal of Habibullah Bahar Degree College, after his murder in Dhaka’s Uttarkhan area.
Neighbors discovered the 49-year-old critically injured at his home, pleading for help. They rushed him to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
During initial questioning, investigators revealed that the couple confessed to their involvement in Saifur Rahman Bhuiyan’s death.
Couple Took Shelter at Victim’s Home
The couple had moved into Bhuiyan’s residence a day before Ramadan. Having eloped and married, they traveled from Nilphamari to Dhaka by train but lost their belongings during the journey. Bhuiyan took them in on the condition that the young woman would work as a housemaid and the young man as his driver. However, within ten days, he was murdered on Monday night.
Neighbors Recall Victim’s Final Moments
On Tuesday, neighbors recounted the incident. In the early hours of Monday, Bhuiyan, severely injured and covered in blood, cried for help from his toilet window. Some residents, having just finished sehri and heading to the mosque, heard his desperate pleas. They broke down the apartment door to rescue him and transported him to a hospital in Uttara, where he later died.
Nayeem Rahman, a neighbor, told Prothom Alo that he had not yet gone to sleep after sehri when he heard cries for help from the adjacent apartment. He and others rushed in to assist Bhuiyan and took him to the hospital.
Upon inspection, bloodstains were found near the toilet window. Following the murder, Bhuiyan’s younger brother, Mohammad Lutfor Rahman Bhuiyan, filed a case at Uttarkhan police station.
Victim’s Background and Connection to the Couple
The case statement revealed that Bhuiyan’s wife owned a 2.5-katha plot in Uttarkhan. Three months ago, he moved into a rented fourth-floor apartment in a six-story building near that plot. His wife and two children reside in Shantinagar, Dhaka.
After sheltering the couple, Bhuiyan introduced the young woman to neighbors as his "sister-in-law" and the young man as his "nephew."
Investigation and Possible Motive
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Uttara Division), Mohidul Islam, confirmed that the couple was taken into custody on Tuesday. They are being interrogated to determine the motive behind the murder.
According to investigators, the young woman is from Nilphamari, and the young man is from Faridpur. Their relationship developed over mobile communication, leading them to elope and marry. They arrived in Dhaka just before Ramadan and lost their belongings at Kamalapur railway station. Distressed, the young woman caught Bhuiyan’s attention, and upon learning of their plight, he offered them shelter.
Late Monday night, an argument reportedly broke out between Bhuiyan and the couple. The young man allegedly attacked Bhuiyan with a knife, inflicting multiple stab wounds before locking the apartment from the outside and fleeing.
Investigators suspect the dispute stemmed from inappropriate behavior toward the young woman. Witnesses confirmed that Bhuiyan sustained multiple stab wounds.
Authorities believe tensions escalated during their stay, culminating in the fatal attack. However, the exact motive behind the murder is still under investigation.
