Fakhrul Sees Khaleda’s Return as Catalyst for Democracy, Equality in Bangladesh

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday expressed hope that the return of party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia would contribute significantly to restoring and strengthening democracy in Bangladesh. Speaking to reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Fakhrul emphasized that Khaleda's presence is vital in the current political climate and would help foster a non-discriminatory and inclusive society.

Khaleda Zia returned home on Monday after nearly four months of advanced medical treatment in London, accompanied by her daughters-in-law, including Dr Zubaida Rahman. A Qatari royal air ambulance, arranged by Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, brought her back via Qatar, landing in Dhaka at 10:42 am.

Fakhrul, along with senior BNP leaders, welcomed her at the airport. He highlighted that Khaleda had endured long-standing oppression under what he termed a “fascist regime” before being allowed to travel abroad for medical care.

Upon her return, heightened security was observed around her Gulshan residence, ‘Firoza’, with restricted traffic and heavy deployment of law enforcement and armed forces. Party supporters lined the 10-kilometre stretch from the airport to Gulshan Avenue from early morning, waving flags to greet their leader.

Khaleda had left for London on January 8 and was initially treated at the London Clinic under the care of Professors Patrick Kennedy and Jennifer Cross. Since January 25, she had been recuperating at the home of her elder son, Tarique Rahman.
