Expensive ‘Dumbas’ draw major attention at Gabtoli cattle market
Five dumbas have arrived at the Gabtoli cattle market in the capital ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, with traders demanding between Tk4.5 lakh and Tk5 lakh for each animal.
The animals were brought to the market by Md Nasim Ali, owner of Rangpur-based Bismillah Agro. He said buyers had shown interest, though sales had yet to meet expectations.
According to Nasim, two of the dumbas were priced at Tk5 lakh each, while the remaining three were tagged at Tk4.5 lakh apiece. However, most buyers were offering less than Tk3 lakh.
“I arrived at the market yesterday. Buyers are coming and making offers. Sales may pick up as the days go by,” he said.
On Saturday, a buyer named Anwar Hossain negotiated for one of the dumbas and offered Tk2.8 lakh, but the seller declined, seeking a higher price.
Anwar said the limited number of dumbas currently available at the market was keeping prices high.
“He brought only five dumbas, so prices remain firm. More animals may arrive later, which could create room for bargaining,” he added.
Alongside cattle and buffaloes, trading in goats and rams has also picked up at the market ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, with farmers and buyers from different districts arriving in increasing numbers.
A visit to the market showed buyers moving around and bargaining over prices. Rams priced from Tk15,000 to more than Tk100,000 were also on sale.
Traders said they expect business activity to increase further in the coming days, although current sales have remained below expectations.
