Election Commissioner Md Anwarul Islam Sarkar has said the nation is facing a deep crisis of confidence, as no individual or institution can claim to fully enjoy the trust of the people.

“The biggest problem is that none of us stands in a place of trust. I do not claim to be in such a position. This lack of confidence is our national crisis. One cannot simply say that someone else is bad and I am good, nor the other way around,” he observed.

He made the remarks on Thursday during a views-exchange meeting with the Reporters Forum for Election and Democracy (RFED) at the Election Commission secretariat in Agargaon. The discussion was centered on newly introduced guidelines for journalists.

Anwarul stressed that rebuilding trust requires fostering strong relationships across professions and ensuring mutual respect.

“To hold a good election, we must support each other. Journalists, who remain engaged around the clock in election activities, are key partners in this effort,” he said.

Referring to a draft policy prepared by journalists, he noted, “It would have been better if the document had reached the commission earlier. Every matter needs detailed scrutiny. I urge you to assist us from your side as well, so that based on reality, we can work together to ensure a credible election.”

He further added that dialogue and sharing experiences between journalists and the Election Commission would be instrumental in overcoming challenges.

The meeting was chaired by Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed and attended by Election Commissioners Abdur Rahmanel Masud, Begum Tahmida Ahmad, and Brigadier General (Retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah. RFED President Kazi Zebel, Vice President ANM Mohibub Uz Zaman, and General Secretary Golam Rabbani, among others, also took part in the discussion.
