DU Students Lay Siege to Shahbagh Police Station, Issue 48-Hour Ultimatum
Students Allege Real Culprits Still at Large
Several hundred Dhaka University students surrounded Shahbagh police station on Friday, demanding swift action and the immediate arrest of those responsible for the murder of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader and final-year student at the Institute of Education and Research.
The agitated students issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The protest began just before noon, with students marching from the base of the Anti-terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture to Shahbagh police station. Upon arrival, they held a sit-in and chanted slogans calling for justice for Shammo and the arrest of his killers.
Later, a student delegation met with senior police officers to discuss the progress of the investigation. However, the protesters expressed dissatisfaction, alleging that the real culprits remain at large.
“Many things are happening around Shammo’s murder, but there has been no trial and no genuine progress. It seems the actual criminals have yet to be caught. We fear innocent people might be wrongly targeted,” said one protesting student, urging authorities to conduct a thorough and high-level investigation.
Shammo was stabbed by a group of assailants in the Suhrawardy Udyan area in the early hours of May 14. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
A student of the 2018–19 batch at the Institute of Education and Research, Shammo also served as the literary and publication secretary of the Chhatra Dal’s AF Rahman Hall unit.
Shariful Islam, Shammo’s elder brother, filed a murder case with Shahbagh police station, naming 10 to 12 unidentified individuals. Meanwhile, police have arrested three suspects in connection with the killing.
