Domestic worker arrested in Jhalakathi in connection with Mohammadpur double homicide

Police on Wednesday arrested the house help accused in the mother-daughter murder in Mohammadpur, detaining her in Jhalakathi.

Confirming the arrest, Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mezbah Uddin said, “In connection with the Mohammadpur double murder, the house help Aysha, 20, has been picked up from Jhalakathi.” He added that further details would be disclosed at a press briefing.

Laila Afroz, 48, and her daughter Nafisa Nawal Binte Aziz, 15—wife and daughter of schoolteacher AZ Azizul Islam—were killed inside their Shahjahan Road residence on Monday (8 December), allegedly by a part-time domestic worker who had identified herself to the family as Ayesha.

The prime suspect fled after the killings, leaving almost no digital trace. She had not provided her real name or address to her employer, complicating the investigation, and her face was never clearly captured on the building’s CCTV footage as she was always veiled. Multiple agencies, including Rab and the Detective Branch, had been tracking her.

She is suspected of fleeing with a mobile phone, a laptop, gold jewellery and cash.

Azizul Islam filed a murder case with Mohammadpur Police Station on Monday night, naming the house help as the sole accused.
