Bangladesh has condemned a reported drone attack targeting the holy city of Makkah in Saudi Arabia, expressing solidarity with the Kingdom and its people.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Bangladesh’s “deep respect” for the sanctity of Makkah Al-Mukarramah and other holy sites in Saudi Arabia, while stressing the importance of protecting them.

The ministry said the safety and security of the holy sites must be fully respected and safeguarded at all times.

Earlier, the Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen’s Houthi rebels said it had intercepted and destroyed a drone launched towards Makkah, reports AFP.

Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said in a statement posted on X that the Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces had intercepted and destroyed the drone before it entered the prohibited airspace around the holy city.

Meanwhile, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) also condemned what it described as “heinous” attacks by the Houthis targeting Makkah and the Madinah region.

“The General Secretariat of the OIC condemns the heinous attacks carried out by the Houthi group against the city of Makkah and the Madinah region,” the organisation said in a statement posted on X.

The Houthis, however, have denied carrying out the reported attack.
