Dhaka-11: Nahid files writ petition contesting Qaiyum’s candidacy
The petition seeks a High Court order to suspend Dr Qaiyum’s candidacy in the constituency.
A writ petition has been filed challenging the legality of Dr MA Qaiyum’s candidacy for the Dhaka-11 constituency, alleging dual citizenship and suppression of information. Dr Qaiyum is the BNP-nominated candidate for the seat.
The petition was filed on Monday by Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and a candidate of the 11-party alliance in Dhaka-11.
It seeks a High Court order to suspend Dr Qaiyum’s candidacy in the constituency.
Advocates Zahirlul Islam Musa and Ali Azgar Sharifi are representing Nahid Islam in the case.
Advocate Zahirlul Islam Musa said the writ petition is likely to be taken up for hearing by the High Court later this week.
Earlier, the Election Commission had declared the nomination papers of both Nahid Islam—NCP convener and candidate of the 11-party alliance—and Dr MA Qaiyum, BNP nominee and the party’s assistant secretary for microcredit affairs, as valid.
The 13th National Parliamentary Election and Referendum are scheduled for 2026.
