Shibir-backed candidates secure victories in 24 out of 26 CUCSU posts

The Islami Chhatra Shibir–backed student alliance Sampriti Shikkharthi Jote has won two of the three top positions—Vice President (VP) and General Secretary (GS)—in the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) election.
Meanwhile, the Assistant General Secretary (AGS) post went to a candidate from the Chhatra Dal–backed panel.
The Election Commission announced the official results early Thursday (16 October) after completing vote counting across all 14 halls.
According to the results, Ibrahim Hossain Rony from the Department of History (2017–18 session) was elected VP with 7,983 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Chhatra Dal–backed Sazzad Hossain Hridoy.
Sayed Bin Habib, also from the Department of History (2019–20 session), secured the GS position with 8,031 votes, beating Chhatra Dal’s Shafayet Hossain.
In contrast, the AGS post went to Ayubur Rahman Tawfiq of the Department of Islamic History and Culture (2021–22 session), representing the Chhatra Dal–supported panel. He won with 7,014 votes, defeating Shibir-backed Sazzat Hossain Munna.
The outcome marks a decisive win for Shibir-backed candidates in two of the three top CUCSU posts.
In a historic moment for campus politics, elections to the CUCSU and hall unions were held on Wednesday for the first time in 35 years.
A total of 27,518 students—including 16,189 male and 11,329 female voters—were eligible to cast ballots in this long-awaited election. A total of 415 candidates contested 26 CUCSU posts, making it one of the most anticipated student polls in recent university history.
