CA Consoles Family Of Bangladesh-Origin Slain NY Policeman Didarul

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the family of Bangladeshi-origin US police officer Didarul Islam, who was killed in a gun attack in New York this July.

During a meeting at his hotel in New York tonight (local time), Prof Yunus handed over a crest to Didarul’s family members as a token of respect.

Present at the meeting were Didarul’s father Mohammad Abdur Rab, mother Minara Begum, sons Ayhan Islam and Azhan Islam, brother Kamrul Hasan, nephew Adian Hasan, sister Nadima Begum, and paternal uncle Ahmed Jamal Uddin.

National Citizen Party (NCP) Member-Secretary Akhter Hossen and Senior Joint Member Secretary Dr Tasnim Jara, who are accompanying the Chief Adviser on his US visit, also attended.

Expressing sympathy, Prof Yunus said, “I read about the incident in the newspapers and was deeply shocked. I could not comprehend how such a tragedy could occur. On television, I saw the massive gathering at his final farewell in New York. He received immense respect and love from thousands of people. When I planned my visit to New York, I felt it was necessary to meet you.”

Family members described Didarul Islam as a dedicated and highly respected officer of the New York Police Department (NYPD). He joined the force in 2021 and was serving at the 47th Precinct in the Bronx. He is survived by his two young sons.

On July 28, Didarul was fatally shot on Park Avenue in Manhattan when a gunman stormed a high-rise corporate building, opened fire indiscriminately, and later took his own life. Didarul was killed while trying to stop the attacker and protect others. His family said his body bore eight to ten bullet wounds.
