A student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) has been suspended over allegations of raping a female student of the same institution, triggering hours of protest on the campus on Tuesday night.

The demonstrations began around 9pm and continued past midnight, with students demanding the accused’s expulsion and exemplary punishment.

In response, the university authorities suspended Sreeshanto Roy, a student of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department from the 2021 batch, and announced plans to file a case against him.

Announcing the decision to the protesters, Prof AKM Masud, Director of Students’ Welfare (DSW), said, “The university has issued a suspension order against Sreeshanto Roy following your demands.”

However, students rejected the decision, chanting “No, no!” and calling for his permanent dismissal.

Prof Masud clarified that he did not have the authority to terminate a student’s enrollment permanently. “I made the announcement as per the vice-chancellor’s directive,” he said, adding that legal proceedings were already in motion. “A case will be filed shortly, and he will be arrested soon.”

He also noted that the university itself would file the case, given the sensitivity of the matter, although students had initially planned to do so.

Campus unrest erupted after the rape allegation surfaced on social media earlier in the evening, sparking widespread outrage and demands for swift and decisive action.
