Adviser: Strict measures to curb overcharging and overloading on waterways during Eid.
  • Strict Action Against Overcharging & Overloading

    • Brigadier General (Retd) Dr. M Sakhawat Hussain, adviser for shipping, labour, and employment, has warned of strict action if complaints arise regarding fare overcharging and excess passengers on waterways during Eid-ul-Fitr.
    • Violators will face fines and possible revocation of route permits.
    • Unfit vessels will not be allowed to operate under any circumstances.
  • Government Directives & Monitoring Measures

    • A set of directives has been issued to the relevant authorities for strict enforcement.
    • The Department of Shipping will closely monitor compliance, ensuring no vessel breaks serial orders.
    • Launches must display the government-mandated fare rate chart prominently, or owners will face penalties.
  • Preventing Passenger Exploitation

    • Passengers must not be charged more than the standard fare, as has been a common issue during Eid.
    • Leased terminal operators at Sadarghat and other locations are strictly prohibited from harassing passengers or charging extra fees.
    • BIWTA and related agencies will oversee these regulations.
  • Enhanced Safety & Security Measures

    • Ansar members will be deployed on night launches for passenger safety.
    • Staff at launches and ferry terminals must wear uniforms and carry ID cards.
    • Special patrols by the Bangladesh Navy, Coast Guard, and River Police will be conducted in crime-prone waterways, including the Shitalakshya River (Narayanganj), Gazaria (Munshiganj), and the Meghna River (Barisal).
  • Traffic & Terminal Management

    • From the 15th of Ramadan, the road from Dhaka’s Zero Point to Sadarghat must remain clear.
    • Haphazard parking of buses will not be allowed, with strict police monitoring and towing of violating vehicles if necessary.
  • On-Ground Inspections

    • The adviser will conduct surprise inspections at Sadarghat and various water routes to ensure proper Eid travel arrangements.
