Türk is scheduled to meet with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, various ministry advisers, the army chief, and other officials
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk is scheduled to visit Bangladesh from Tuesday to Wednesday, where he will engage in multiple meetings with senior officials, civil society representatives, and students who participated in recent protests. During his visit, the UN human rights chief will meet with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, advisers from various ministries, the Chief Justice, the army chief, and heads of several reform commissions, as stated by the UN office in Dhaka on Monday.
Türk will also deliver a speech at the University of Dhaka and meet with students involved in the recent protests. Additionally, he plans to hold discussions with UN agencies and members of diplomatic missions in Bangladesh.
At the conclusion of his mission on Wednesday, the high commissioner will hold a press conference in Dhaka.
Human rights concerns gained prominence following the protests in July and August, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of protesters and injuries to thousands more.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has deployed a fact-finding team to Bangladesh to investigate violations and abuses during the protests, analyze root causes, and make recommendations for advancing justice, accountability, and long-term reforms.
Dr. Yunus invited the UN Human Rights Office chief to visit Bangladesh and support his planned reform agenda. To facilitate this, the Human Rights Office seeks to establish a presence in Bangladesh, which requires signing a host country agreement. A draft agreement has already been shared with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
