The Commonwealth's Assistant Secretary General, Prof Luis Gabriel Franceschi, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting free, fair, and transparent elections in Bangladesh.
Franceschi made these comments on Tuesday after meeting with members of the Election Reform Commission in Dhaka's Agargaon area. He is currently leading a Commonwealth delegation visiting the country.
He told reporters that the Commonwealth is fully prepared to support the reform commission to ensure the elections are conducted fairly.
Badiul Alam Majumdar, head of the Election Reform Commission, shared that the Commonwealth delegation inquired about Bangladesh’s electoral system and expressed their readiness to provide all necessary assistance to facilitate fair elections.
The Election Reform Commission was established by the interim government on October 3. The eight-member commission has been assigned the task of submitting recommendations and a report to the chief advisor within 90 days.
The commission is currently gathering insights and exploring methods to overhaul the electoral system, aiming to ensure free, inclusive, and impartial national and local elections in the future.
