Bangladesh and Japan have signed an "exchange of notes" for a Japanese grant aid project aimed at improving air pollution monitoring equipment, with funding of up to 835 million Japanese yen (approximately $5 million).

As part of the project, air pollution monitoring equipment will be installed in Dhaka and Chittagong to enhance the capacity for measuring and analyzing pollutants, primarily from vehicle emissions. This initiative aims to strengthen pollution control efforts in both cities.

Japanese Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Ikuina Akiko attended the signing ceremony, where Japan’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Saida Shinichi, and Economic Relations Division Secretary, Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky, formalized the agreement on Monday.

Parliamentary Vice-Minister Ikuina emphasized that under the "Strategic Partnership," Japan will continue supporting Bangladesh’s development and prosperity, contributing to regional and global peace, stability, and bilateral relations.

Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Md Khayrul Hasan, was also present at the event. Following the exchange of notes, Ichiguchi Tomohide, Chief Representative of the JICA Bangladesh Office, and Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky signed a corresponding grant agreement.
