Food inflation declined in January, extending the positive trend from December.

According to the latest data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), food inflation fell by 2.2 percentage points to 10.72%. In comparison, it stood at 12.92% in December and 13.8% in November.

This decline in food prices contributed to lowering the overall inflation rate to 9.94% in January, down from 10.89% in December.

However, inflation remains high compared to previous years.

In FY2023-24, inflation hit a record 9.73%, rising from 9.02% the previous year. Despite efforts to keep inflation below 6%, it has continued to climb, with experts warning of potential future increases.

Meanwhile, non-food inflation saw a slight uptick, reaching 9.32% in January from 9.26% in December.
