Ex-DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam Jailed in Murder Case

A Dhaka court has ordered the imprisonment of former Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Atiqul Islam in connection with the death of seventh-grader Rakib Hasan during the quota reform movement on July 19 in Mohammadpur. The court, presided by Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ali Haider, issued the order after police sought Atiqul's detention.

The case was filed on September 1 by Nurul Amin, Rakib's father, against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 87 others. Additionally, Atiqul was shown arrested in two other cases involving the deaths of Mohammad Rony, 19, and Al-Shahriar Hossain, 23, on the same day. Atiqul, also a former president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, was arrested yesterday in Mohakhali DOHS.

Following the death of DNCC's first mayor, Annisul Huq, Atiqul was elected mayor in 2019 and re-elected the following year, amid allegations of electoral irregularities. He was removed from office by the interim government on August 19.
