An unverified video of the crash showed the Azerbaijan Airlines-operated Embraer plane bursting into flames upon impact with the ground, followed by thick black smoke. The Ministry of Emergencies of Kazakhstan stated that fire services had extinguished the blaze and that survivors were being treated at a nearby hospital.

Azerbaijan Airlines confirmed that the Embraer 190 aircraft, flight J2-8243, was en route from Baku to Grozny, the capital of Russia’s Chechnya, but was forced to make an emergency landing about 3 km (1.8 miles) from Aktau due to fog in Grozny. Russian news agencies reported that the plane had been rerouted because of the weather conditions in Grozny.

Kazakh authorities stated they had launched an investigation into various possible causes, including a technical malfunction, according to Russia's Interfax news agency.
