The government has appointed 96 more previously deprived candidates from the 27th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination to different BCS cadres.

The Ministry of Public Administration issued a gazette notification on Wednesday (13 May) following recommendations from the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC).

According to the notification, the newly appointed officers have been instructed to join their respective cadre-controlling ministries or divisions by 18 May. Failure to do so within the stipulated time will be considered unwillingness to accept the appointment, leading to cancellation of the offer.

The notification also stated that, to preserve seniority, the appointments will be treated as effective retrospectively from the date the first appointment notification for their batch was issued. Their notional seniority will likewise be maintained from the original joining date of the batch. However, they will not receive any arrears or retrospective financial benefits.

A total of 3,567 candidates initially passed the first viva voce examination of the 27th BCS. However, in 2007, the caretaker government cancelled the results over allegations of irregularities and corruption and later held a second viva examination. Candidates who passed the first viva challenged the cancellation before the High Court. On 3 July 2008, the court upheld the legality of cancelling the original viva results. The petitioners later sought leave to appeal before the Appellate Division against that verdict.

On 20 February last year, the Appellate Division ordered the appointment of 1,137 deprived candidates from the 27th BCS examination.

Following the order, the Ministry of Public Administration issued another notification on 18 December appointing 673 previously deprived candidates.
