Yunus Confronted with ‘You Destroy Democracy’ Slogan at New York Airport

Former interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus faced angry remarks from a group of Bangladeshi expatriates at John F Kennedy International Airport in New York on Monday.

Yunus arrived from Doha on a Qatar Airways flight on 12 October. According to a video circulating on social media, several expatriates confronted him with angry comments after he reached Terminal 8.

The footage shows people shouting at Yunus as he was being taken out of the airport in a wheelchair. They called him a “terrorist” and accused him of killing Bangladeshis, undermining democracy and being responsible for the deaths of thousands of police personnel. Some also shouted, “Go back.”

Security personnel subsequently escorted Yunus away from the scene.

Several people present at the airport said Yunus and Lamia Morshed, who was accompanying him, quickly returned inside the airport during the incident.

However, the identities of those involved in the confrontation and further details of the incident could not be independently confirmed immediately.
