Thousands gather in Srimangal as preparations complete for Prime Minister’s arrival
A large stage has been set up at the Victoria High School ground in Srimangal, Moulvibazar, where thousands of people are now waiting for the arrival of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to inaugurate the third phase of the Family Card distribution programme at 1:00pm on Wednesday (17 June) in Srimangal, known as the tea capital of Bangladesh.
Since the early hours of the day, people from across the district, along with party leaders and activists, have been arriving at the venue by bus, CNG-run auto-rickshaw and other means of transport. The area has taken on a festive mood ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit.
As part of the programme, the Prime Minister will distribute Family Cards and provide financial assistance cheques to members of various ethnic minority communities and patients. He has already left Sylhet by road for Srimangal to attend the event.
A visit to the venue revealed a huge crowd comprising people from all walks of life as well as party supporters. Members of different ethnic communities, dressed in colourful traditional outfits, were seen attending the gathering, while beneficiaries waited in a designated area of the field. Many supporters were eagerly looking forward to catching a glimpse of both the party chairman and the Prime Minister.
“I reached the venue at 9:00am to see the Prime Minister,” said Shahan Ali Musa. “His visit to the tea capital has drawn thousands of people here.”
Meanwhile, tight security arrangements have been put in place throughout Srimangal town ahead of the Prime Minister’s arrival.
